Buying an LED bulb is much easier when you know the few specifications that really matter. The fitting, brightness, colour temperature and dimmability should all match the light and the room.

1. Check the fitting
Common UK fittings include GU10, E14, E27, B22 and G9. If you are replacing an existing bulb, check the fitting and physical dimensions before ordering.
2. Look at lumens
Lumens indicate how much light a bulb produces. Wattage is primarily a measure of energy use, so compare lumens when you want to judge brightness.
3. Choose the colour temperature
Warm white is generally suited to relaxing spaces, while neutral or cooler white can be useful for kitchens, offices and task lighting.
4. Check dimmability
If the light is controlled by a dimmer, the LED bulb must be compatible with the dimming system. Always check the product specification.
